We are still using 20th century language to describe 21st century ecosystems: it’s been a long time since we wrote “documents,” today we write information that gets used and reused everywhere. It might be fragmented out into various places in the user interface, or it might be collected into a coherent whole that resembles an old-fashioned “document,” but it’s still “information.” We chunk it, slice it, dice it, rearrange it, massage it, condition it, display it, and reformat it.
We need to forget terms like “document” and “on line help” and realise that we’re helping people learn about technology, and we do that with words, pictures, videos, sound, and our intelligence. The tools and standards are paths for doing this, not an end in themselves.
