As we all know, technical communicators (or even better: infomedians) need many competencies to be successful in their jobs. They should be able to design information for a range of different media, to explain technical concepts to a range of different target groups, to use a range of tools and much more.
- Do you, as a technical communicator, have an overview of all competencies that may be important to become more proficient in your job?
- Do you, as someone who is in charge of teams of technical communicators, know which competencies you may expect?
Probably, you have some ideas about which competencies are important. We are curious to hear about these ideas.
tekom has created a cross-industry competence framework for technical communication. This Competence Framework describes the occupational profile and potential job profiles in technical communication and was strictly task- and action-oriented. It provides clear, basic guidance for companies of any kind and for technical communication employees and people who are interested in or entering the profession.
In our workshop at IEn2016, we would like to demonstrate this framework and to discuss the value of the framework for yourself and for the profession. The framework is freely available; take a look at: http://competences.technical-communication.org/home.html
When knowing which competencies are important, a next question may be: How to educate future technical communicators?tekom has recently started another project to answer this question: TecCOMFrame. This project is focused on academic education; it aims to define a joint European academic competence framework and curricula for the training of technical communicators. Partners from eight higher education institutes from across Europe are working together on this project. Last October, we started building an academic competence framework, based on the existing framework. Recently, the first draft of this new framework was finished. So, it is time to ask for your comments. We hope that you would like to share your ideas about TecCOMFrame at IEn2016.
More information on the project can be found on this page: www.teccom-frame.eu
